Weekly Rundown: 2019 Futures League Week 4

WEYMOUTH, Mass -- Week 4 of the Futures League’s 2019 season featured multiple close games that came down to the wire and also the first and second home run derby finishes of the season (both won by Nashua)! As always here in the Futures League, it was a jam-packed week of entertainment and amazing baseball for the fans to enjoy. 

 

Monday, June 17th

Nashua 7, Brockton 6

In the Futures League, if two teams are still tied after 10 innings, they will face off in a home run derby to determine the winner of the game. The league saw their first derby of the year Monday night when the Nashua Silver Knights defeated the Brockton Rox in a home run derby shootout to break their tie after the 10th inning. Ben Irvine and Joe Bramanti lead the way for the Nashua offense. Irvine going 2 for 5 with an RBI while Bramanti went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Joe Sullivan did some damage in the Rox lineup going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Sullivan would also represent Brockton to start the home run derby, but was substituted by Andrew Marra after a handful of pitches. Billy Butler represented Nashua in the home run derby and beat Marra by a score of 6-3 in the first round to give Nashua the unique victory.

Westfield 7, Worcester 1

The Westfield Starfires scored seven runs on nine hits while holding the Worcester Bravehearts to just one run to pick up the 7-1 win Monday night in Worcester. Elijah Dale stood out in the Starfires lineup going 2 for 4 with three RBIs on a bases-clearing double in the first inning. Jakob Sessa was one of the only bright spots in the Bravehearts lineup going 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Bristol 6, Pittsfield 5

The Bristol Blues scored six runs late in the game to outscore the Pittsfield Suns 6-5 on Monday night. Christian Beal had a monster day for the Blues going 4 for 5 with two doubles, two runs scored, three RBIs, and a stolen base to earn himself the On Deck Sports player of the night in the Futures League. Jack Culumovic performed well at the plate for Pittsfield going 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Andrew Fernandez also had a good day at the plate in the Suns’ loss going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Bristol Blues racked up 12 hits but could only get three runs to cross the plate as the Worcester Bravehearts defeated the Blues by a score of 6-3. Worcester only had four hits in the game but they made them count. P.J. Barry went 1 for 4 for Worcester with a solo home run and a run scored. Jakob Sessa also had a good day at the plate for the Bravehearts going 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI single. Jordan Laske shined in the Blues lineup going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

The North Shore Navigators scored five runs in the second inning which seemed to be the difference as they went on to defeat the Pittsfield Suns by a score of 7-3. Andrew Olszak and Logan Bravo both went 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead the Navigators offense. Jackson Petersen had a great day for the Suns in their loss going 3 for 3 with three RBIs.

Nashua 10, Brockton 2

The Nashua Silver Knights exploded for 10 runs of offense to defeat the Brockton Rox 10-2 on Tuesday night. The Silver Knights had multiple players in their lineup with great days at the plate. Jack Arend lead the way going 1 for 2 with five RBIs. Mike La Rocca also had a great day going 2 for 3 with three runs scored. One of the only bright spots in the Brockton lineup was Eddy Hart as he went 1 for 2 with two runs scores.

The Westfield Starfires scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with a win vs. the Brockton Rox Wednesday night. Devin Kellogg hit the walk-off single in the ninth to score Matt Costanza. Kellogg finished the game 1 for 5 with two RBIs. Evan Sleight stood out in the Rox lineup going 2 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Pittsfield 9, Worcester 4

The Pittsfield Suns scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Worcester Bravehearts 9-4 on Wednesday night. Bryce Osmond had a monster day at the plate for the Suns going 2 for 2 with three runs scored and four RBIs on a grand slam in the first inning. Mack Cheli stood out in the Worcester lineup going 1 for 4 with with a run scored and three RBIs.

The Bristol Blues shutout the first place North Shore Navigators while scoring seven runs on eight hits Wednesday night to defeat the Navigators 7-0. Zeke Diamond lead the Blues offense going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. J.T. Mounce also had a good day for the Blues going 2 for 3 with two runs scored. There were only three hits in a tough offensive day for the Navigators. Kade Kretzchmar went 1 for 2 with a single.

Brockton 3, Westfield 1

The Brockton Rox and Westfield Starfires both had seven hits Thursday nights, but Brockton drove in three runs to outscore Westfield 3-1. Gaby Cruz had a great day at the plate for Brockton going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. There were no players with multiple hits for the Starfires in this game but Tommy Quinn went 1 for 3 and scored the team’s only run.

The Nashua Silver Knights exploded for 18 hits and 15 runs Thursday night to outscore the North Shore Navigators 15-8. Joe Bramanti had a monster day at the plate for Nashua going 4 for 5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Dylan Jones also had a great day at the plate for the red-hot Nashua offense going 2 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. North Shore had five players with multiple hits in their losing effort. Tyler MacGregor led the way for that Navigators offense going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

North Shore 2, Worcester 1 (Game 1 of Double Header)

In a seven inning Game 1 of a double header, the North Shore Navigators broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning after scoring a run on a wild pitch to pull off the 2-1 victory over the Worcester Bravehearts. Tyler MacGregor shined in the North Shore lineup going 2 for 3 with an RBI. The Bravehearts struggled offensively with only two hits which both came off the bat of Idelson Taveras. Taveras finished 2 for 2 with a run scored.

Worcester 6, North Shore 4 (Game 2 of Double Header)

The Worcester Bravehearts would end up splitting the double header with the North Shore Navigators after defeating them 6-4 in Game 2 Friday night. Both teams had six hits in the ball game. Craig Corliss had a good day at the plate going 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Sean Lawlor shined at the plate for the Navigators going 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

The Pittsfield Suns went down 3-1 early in the game to the Westfield Starfires but came back to win the game 4-3 in extra innings. Jeff Boggess had the game winning single in the top of the 10th inning. Boggess would go on the lead the team’s offense finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI. The Starfires had just four hits on the night and three of them came off the bat of Andrew Ciacciarelli who finished 3 for 3.

The Brockton Rox could only get one run to cross the plate Friday night as the Nashua Silver Knights outscore them 3-1. Noah Lucier found success at the plate going 2 for 3 with a run scored for Nashua. Mitch Donofrio had three of the Rox’s five hits in the game. Donofrio would finish 3 for 4 and scored the team’s only run.

The Futures League saw it’s second home run derby ending of the year when Nashua’s Billy Butler out-slugged three different Pittsfield Suns to win the home run derby 10-6. Pittsfield started the game with a 3-0 lead but had surrendered the lead by the seventh inning. The game would be tied 3-3 heading into extra innings. No one scored in the tenth inning, thus bringing the game to the home run derby. Jared Dupere had a great day at the plate for Nashua going 3 for 4. Caeden Trenkle stood out in the Suns lineup going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The North Shore Navigators scored five runs in the final two innings to outscore the Brockton Rox 5-2. Tyler MacGregor led the North Shore offense going 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI and Colin Wetterau put up two RBIs. Brockton’s only player with a multi-hit game was Gaby Cruz who finished 2 for 4.

The Worcester Bravehearts put up 10 runs on 13 hits to outscore the North Shore Navigators 10-6 Sunday night. Ben McNeill had a great day at the plate for the Bravehearts going 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Tyler Becker drove in three runs for the Bravehearts as well. Louis Olivieri led the Navigators offense going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

The Pittsfield Suns defeated the Nashua Silver Knights 4-3 off a game-winning RBI single from Bryce Osmond in the top of the ninth. Mark Coley led the way for the Suns going 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Dan Baruch also found success at the plate for Pittsfield going 3 for 4 with a run scored. Benjamin Cowles stood out in the Nashua lineup going 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
