"The Futures League All-Star Game showcases the exceptional level of talent and competition that defines our league, while giving fans the chance to see top collegiate players from all over the country compete together on one stage," Futures League Commissioner Joe Paolucci said. "We congratulate all of this year's All-Stars and look forward to a tremendous event in Nashua that celebrates the league's quality of play and the bright future of baseball."
Featuring six members of the hometown Nashua Silver Knights, the Bikers will serve as the home team in the Futures League's edition of the midsummer classic. The roster includes outfielder Connor Smith (Gannon), who entered Wednesday's regular-season action as the league leader with five home runs and 28 RBI. Silver Knights teammate Peter Keblinsky (Southern Maine) is the second-leading run producer in the circuit.
The first-place Vermont Lake Monsters anchor the Bikers with 10 All-Stars in total, including the incoming Mississippi State duo of shortstop Zach Geertsma and catcher/designated hitter Hunter Strohm. On the mound, Justin Sweeney (Saint Joseph's) has cemented his midsummer status with a 0.57 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. The Bikers also boast Westfield Starfires righty Cam Fisher (UMass Boston), who leads the Futures League with 38 strikeouts in 30 innings this summer.
New Britain Bees ace Garret Garbinski (UConn) highlights the Hikers squad. The reigning Futures League Top Pro Pitching Prospect has returned for a second straight summer, pitching to a 0.75 ERA through a league-high 36 innings. Dylan Izenman (Mount St. Mary's) has a 2.48 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 32.2 innings for the Lowell Spinners, while the Worcester Bravehearts' Lane LeClair (Franklin Pierce) has not allowed an earned run through 17.1 frames.
Norwich Sea Unicorns infielder Mike Fiatarone (Bryant) leads all qualifying All-Star Game players with a .346 average and also brings a league-leading 23 stolen bases to the Hikers. New Britain's Tim Hennig (Binghamton) has been another key veteran returning from last summer's playoff team, hitting .393 with 13 RBI in 16 games. Also on the mound, Fiatarone's Sea Unicorn teammate Jack Scholz (Catholic) has racked up four saves in 12 appearances.
Before the All-Star Game's first pitch at 6:03 p.m., the league's top three sluggers will highlight the field for the Home Run Derby, presented by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Closely behind Smith, who has socked five homers, Geertsma and Worcester first baseman/outfielder Julian Mercado (College of Central Florida) both have four on the active leaderboard. The top two Futures League competitors will go head-to-head with former Boston Red Sox World Series champion Jonny Gomes in the championship round.
